Our Story
I'm Jolynn Schalla, the founder of Flawlessly Feral. I was raised in the outdoors and have an immense appreciation for nature, wildlife, and outdoor recreation. Like most outdoorspeople, I work full time to support my expensive hunting and fishing habits (seriously, what's up with these gas prices?!) When I'm not at work, I'm focusing all of my effort into instilling the same love and appreciation of the outdoors in my one-year-old daughter, with my husband's help.
Creating a business was never part of my plan. I'm no businesswoman and, quite frankly, I'd rather be fishing right now than working on this website and keeping all the other business odds and ends in order.
The truth is, Flawlessly Feral was born out of the burning frustration I felt every time I tried to find a product for my adventures. I have spent COUNTLESS hours searching for things that would make my life easier while out hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. I've tried several of the products that seemed like they could help, but they almost never solved the problems I was facing, and sometimes they even made things more difficult.
I decided a long time ago that I'd just deal with it. I figured that since other women were surviving in this 'good enough' market, I could live with it too.
When I gave birth to my baby girl, my whole perspective changed.
How will I explain to her that she'll have to carry more gear than men on her adventures just so she can pee in private? Or that she'll have to leave good fishing spots and spook deer out of areas she's hunting just because of her anatomy? Or the one that broke my own heart this past year - that she'll have to choose between doing the things she loves and being with her new baby someday.
I don't want to have these conversations with her, and I shouldn't have to. There are enough of us women in the outdoors now that we should have more, and better, solutions for the problems we face.
I'm taking a stand, but I can't do this alone. We need to work together as a community to make the outdoors more female-friendly for our daughters, our daughters' daughters, and future generations of outdoorswomen to come.
How will we do that? One solution at a time.
When we face a problem in the outdoors, we need to talk about it as a community and work to develop solutions. Maybe there are solutions available out there that we just don't all know about, so simply sharing information with one another can go a long ways.
Some problems won't be so easy. We might need to think about new products that don't currently exist on the market. This is something I'm personally tackling head-on, as I know these things take time and I want to have solutions available before my daughter ever has to face the problems herself. Check out the 'Coming Soon' page on our website to see what I'm working on now!
If any of this resonates with you, I hope you will recognize the importance of adopting a solution-oriented mindset and begin thinking about how you can contribute to a better future for outdoorswomen.
One way you can contribute today is by sharing your experiences with our community of outdoorswomen on Facebook or Instagram.
The most important thing you can do, though, is continue raising, supporting, and advocating for the little girls and women in your life who live and breathe the outdoors.
From the bottom of my heart - thank you for listening!
